Here, In the Woods

there is no closing
between life and death.
The tumbled trees
turn into gardens of
undreamed of things…
lichen, elaborate as lace,
a scarlet fairy-ring,
green tendrils
in the rubble.

Life spills into
death spills
into life.

Clearly,
this is the way.
The dead are lifting us,
the threads unsevered
after all.
Here, in the woods,
I feel their voices
filter through me,
the unseen hand
that curves
against my cheek,
the memory
that is not mine.
