Here, In the Woods

there is no closing
between life and death.
The tumbled trees
turn into gardens of
undreamed of things…
lichen, elaborate as lace,
a scarlet fairy-ring,
green tendrils
in the rubble.

Life spills into
death spills
into life.

this is the way.
The dead are lifting us,
the threads unsevered
after all.
Here, in the woods,
I feel their voices
filter through me,
the unseen hand
that curves
against my cheek,
the memory
that is not mine.
